Section 6 · Evaluation
How a Score Is Built
D-score plus E-score, minus neutral deductions and penalties. How the E-Jury is averaged, and the short exercise.
Unofficial summary. The FIG Code of Points and its newsletters are the authority; every rule links to its page there.
Every judge
The Final Score
Final Score = D-score + E-score − neutral deductions − penalties.
- D-score
- The D-Jury. The content of the exercise: difficulty, Element Group requirements, connections, and the stick bonus (Art. 7.2.9).
- E-score
- The E-Jury. Deductions from 10.00 for composition, technique and body position.
- From the Final Score
- The D-Jury, D1 or the Superior Jury President. Neutral deductions (time, line, a short exercise) and penalties (conduct, attire, apparatus).
The rules are the same in every session: Qualifications, Team Final, All-Around Final and Apparatus Finals. The exception is vault, which has its own rules in Qualifications and Apparatus Finals.
The All-Around score is the sum of the six Final Scores. Team totals and qualification for the finals follow the Technical Regulations of the competition.
E-Jury
Averaging the E-Jury
The deductions of each E judge are added up. The middle totals are averaged, as the table shows. With five or four judges, the highest and the lowest total are dropped. With seven, the two highest and the two lowest are dropped. With three or two, none are dropped. The Final E-score is 10.00 minus that average.
- 7 E judgesAverage of the middle 3
- 5 E judgesAverage of the middle 3
- 4 E judgesAverage of the middle 2
- 3 E judgesAverage of all 3
- 2 E judgesAverage of both
- Deductions are in tenths. Together they can take at most 10.00.
- The E-score can reach 10.00 even in a short exercise. The D-Jury takes a neutral deduction for the missing elements.
Superior Jury President
Showing and Changing a Score
The scoring staff compute the Final Score. It is shown only after the Apparatus Supervisor has confirmed it.
- Official FIG competitions
- The D-score and the Final E-score are displayed. Every individual E-score appears on the results.
- Any other competition
- The D-score, the E-score and the Final Score must all be displayed.
After a score has been shown, it is generally not changed. The exceptions are an inquiry, or a revision of time or line.
D-Jury
Short Exercise
If an exercise has fewer than six elements, the D-Jury takes a neutral deduction from the Final Score. The E-score is not affected and can still reach 10.00.
- 8, 7 or 6 elementsNone
- 5 elements−3.0
- 4 elements−4.0
- 3 elements−5.0
- 2 elements−6.0
- 1 element−7.0
- No elements−10.0
D1 makes sure the short-exercise deduction is applied.
The Code does not say which elements count towards the number.
