Release, Flight and Regrasp
- Flight
- A conspicuous rise of the body and a simultaneous release of both hands.
- Regrasp
- Time to prepare it, straight arms, and a smooth full swing after it. A Tkatchev to handstand is possible, but not expected.
- Low amplitude−0.1or−0.3
- Releasing one hand at a time−0.1
- Bent arms on the regrasp−0.1or−0.3
- A flight with salto over the bar not followed by a giant swing−0.3
Newsletter 3, p. 5 · in force from 1 January 2026
Both hands must release together. Releasing one at a time is a 0.1 deduction.

D-Jury
When a Flight Counts
A flight element always receives value if a distinct hang phase is shown before the gymnast falls. A distinct hang is a regrasp with two hands and a controlled swing through the vertical.
- Regrasp with two hands and a controlled swing through the vertical, then a fallRecognised
- Regrasp with one arm, and the exercise continues without a stopRecognised
Newsletter 3, p. 5 · in force from 1 January 2026
Defines the distinct hang, and recognises a one-arm regrasp that continues without a stop.
What applied before
The Code said only that a distinct hang phase before the fall was enough.
D-Jury
Two of Each Style, and a Fifth Flight
At most two flight elements of each style:
- Tkatchev and Piatti
- Kovacs
- Gienger
- Jäger
- Markelov
- salto forward over the bar
The salto backward with ½ turn over the bar (II.82) and the Gaylord 2 (II.83) are Kovacs style.
Normally at most four of the seven best may come from one Element Group. Here a fifth flight element may count if at least two flights are directly connected. The lowest such connection is C + C.
- A third flight element of one styleTwo permitted
- A fifth flight, with two flights directly connected (at least C + C)Permitted
Newsletter 1, p. 6 · in force from August 2025
The limit is two of each style. II.82 and the Gaylord 2 count as Kovacs style. The fifth flight is among the counting elements and needs two flights directly connected.

Tkatchev, Yamawaki and ½-Turn Flights
- Tkatchev straight, body bent more than 45° as the feet pass over the barTkatchev piked, C
- Tkatchev straight, body bent after passing over the barD, with execution deductions
- Yamawaki with an excessive pike or poor vertical over the barby the E-JuryDeducted
- Yamawaki with the body bent more than 45°B value
- Tkatchev ½ or Yamawaki ½ regrasped without enough turn, then continued to handstand or straight into a releaseNo value
- Flight with ½ turn to mixed el-grip, more than half the turn completed at the catchNone
- The same, with the turn insufficient at the catchby the E-Jury−0.1or−0.3or−0.5
- The Tkatchev straight must be straight throughout until the regrasp.
- The Yamawaki must be straight as it passes through the vertical over the bar.
- The last two rows are for a flight with ½ turn to mixed el-grip that continues to a back uprise to handstand.
D-Jury
Winkler / Pogorelev (II.42)
It is a G. The body is straight up to the point where the feet pass nearest to the bar.
- Body bent more than 45° before the feet pass the barby the E-Jury−0.3D value
- Non-distinct position or bent body, up to 30°by the E-Jury−0.1
- Non-distinct position or bent body, more than 30°, up to 45°by the E-Jury−0.3
- Deviation from the plane of movement, up to 15°by the E-Jury−0.1
- Deviation from the plane of movement, more than 15°by the E-Jury−0.3
- Bent legsby the E-Jury−0.1or−0.3or−0.5
- Bent anklesby the E-Jury−0.1
- Low amplitudeby the E-Jury−0.1or−0.3
The 0.3 for bending past 45° is for non-distinct position, and the D-Jury credits a D. The other rows are the Code's errors as Newsletter 2 listed them for this element. Newsletter 3 changed what happens past 45°, and it limits the straight-body requirement to the phase before the feet pass the bar.
Newsletter 2, p. 3 · in force from 19 September 2025
Required a straight body. A body bent more than 45° during the release was 0.5 and not recognised. Listed the Code's errors that apply to the element.
Newsletter 3, p. 4 · in force from 1 January 2026
The body must be straight only up to where the feet pass nearest to the bar. A bend of more than 45° before then makes it a D, with 0.3 for non-distinct position.
What applied before
Newsletter 2: a body bent more than 45° during the release was 0.5 and not recognised.
